Member Forum

A members-only discussion forum inside the platform, with no separate tool to run.

What it does

Member Forum is a members-only discussion board built into the platform — no separate tool, no additional login. Members start posts from a New Post button with a title and Markdown body (bold, italic, links, headings, code, lists, blockquotes, horizontal rules). Replies form a multi-level threaded comment tree — a reply to a comment becomes a child of that comment, so a back-and-forth between two members stays grouped under the original point with visual indentation and a Hide replies toggle to collapse long sub-threads. Sort by newest, recently active, or most discussed; search keywords across titles and body.

Administrators have a dedicated forum management tab. Pin important posts to the top of the listing, lock threads to prevent further replies (post stays readable, comment input disappears), post announcements that pin and notify every member at once, and delete posts or comments that breach club rules. In-platform notifications fire on new comments, new replies, pin and lock actions, and admin announcements — each deep-linking to the thread. If the club prefers not to run a forum at all, the whole module can be turned off.

What sells it

  • Multi-level threaded replies — comments reply to comments with visual indentation, so spinnaker-drop Q&A stays as one organised thread rather than fifteen WhatsApp messages
  • Markdown formatting on posts (up to 10,000 chars) — bold, italic, headings, links, code, lists, blockquotes, horizontal rules
  • Admin pin and lock — keep committee announcements visible above newer posts and freeze answered threads as searchable reference posts
  • Forum-wide announcements that pin and notify every member at once — for time-sensitive club news
  • Per-author attribution on every post and comment (avatar initial, name, timestamp) — no anonymous posting, full moderation accountability
  • Searchable history from day one — new members get the full archive on join, unlike a WhatsApp group that starts at zero
  • Optional module — the forum can be turned off entirely if your club prefers not to run one
  • In-platform notifications on replies, pins, locks, and announcements, each deep-linking to the relevant thread

Why this matters

WhatsApp and Facebook groups carry real drawbacks for club governance: no searchable history for new members, no admin moderation, threads that scroll off the feed within days, and content sitting on a platform the club does not control. A built-in forum keeps discussions inside the club's environment, gives admins the controls they need, and gives new members the full history of discussions from the day they join.

Frequently asked questions

No. The forum is members-only. Access requires an active member login. Non-members and unauthenticated visitors cannot read posts or replies, which keeps club discussions private.

Members Forum listing page with a header "Members Forum — Discuss, share, and connect with fellow members" and a blue "New Post" button. Below the header are a search bar and a "Newest" sort dropdown, then eight post cards showing title, body preview, author (with avatar circle and name), posted timestamp, lock badge where applicable, view count, and comment count. Posts cover Wednesday Series spinnaker drop, a 1720 spinnaker for sale, antifoul recommendations, an Ardglass cruise weekend, a closed AGM agenda thread (showing the lock state), a pinned admin Test post, and a prize-giving photos request.
Forum listing — every member can start a post via "New Post", sort the list by newest / recently active / most discussed, and search across titles and body content. Pinned posts stay at the top; locked threads show a lock badge.
Forum post detail page for "Wednesday Series — anyone else struggling with the spinnaker drop at the leeward mark?" with the post body shown in full and a "Comments (5)" section beneath. Five comments are visible: top-level replies from Patrick Quinn, Niamh Brannigan, and Robert Stevens; nested under Patrick is a reply from James O'Brien, and nested under Niamh is a reply from Patrick. Each comment has an author avatar initial, name, timestamp, body, and Reply / Hide replies actions. A "Add a comment..." input box with a send button sits at the bottom of the thread.
Multi-level threaded replies — Patrick replies to the original post, James replies to Patrick, and the indented hierarchy stays clear. Every comment has its own Reply button so any sub-thread can continue.
Forum post detail page for "Antifoul recommendation — switching off International Micron, what are people using?" by Robert Stevens. The post body is rendered above a "Comments (3)" section containing three top-level replies — Daniel McCready recommending Hempel Mille NCT, James O'Brien warning about brand-compatibility, and Patrick Quinn endorsing Coppercoat — each with author avatar, name, timestamp, body text, and a Reply action. A comment input box sits at the bottom.
A typical Q&A thread — members share recommendations and lessons learned, the conversation stays in one searchable place rather than disappearing into a WhatsApp scroll, and any member can jump in via the Reply button.
